Spring 2011

Spring is definitely here... tiny green leaves are starting to appear on tree branches, while blooms are bringing splashes of color into the landscape! This is the perfect time integrate more trees and shrubs into your yard through programs such as Backyard Buffers, Woods In Your Backyard - Neighborhood Green, or Marylanders Plant Trees. Don't have any more room to plant trees and shrubs in your yard? Care for and plant trees in your community and apply for a community PLANT award this year!

Looking to enjoy and contribute to a cleaner, greener environment in other ways? How about volunteering for the Big Sweep, a local stream cleanup, or participating in the new Frederick County Green Homes Challenge! Join community members for fun events like Nature Fest at Fountain Rock Nature Center, or take part in state-wide activities for the International Year of Forests- 2011.

Students have a great opportunity to become more involved in environmental activities, too. Recently the Maryland State Board of Education approved an Environmental Literacy Graduation Requirement that will ensure Maryland students receive vital exposure to the natural world through the classroom. There is also a wonderful program sponsored by the Maryland Forestry Boards called the Natural Resources Careers Conference (NRCC). NRCC provides a week-long, hands-on learning experience for high school students interested in college studies or careers in forestry and natural resources. Applications are being accepted now!

Please visit our homepage for more articles, and remember to visit our calendar of events regularly for updates on additional events and opportunities throughout 2011.
